Netherlands’ KSA Welcomes New Chairman Michel Groothuizen

The Dutch gambling regulator (KSA) has selected Michel Groothuizen as its next chairman.

After the announcement from Jansen about his retirement, the search for a new leader started in October of the previous year. Groothuizen, with a background in law and public administration, has recently completed a four-year term as the second-in-command at the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI).

Ric de Rooij, the deputy secretary general at the ministry of justice and security, which oversees the KSA, praised Groothuizen’s appointment. “Michel brings to the KSA a wealth of management experience and a deep understanding of the sector,” he said. “This is crucial as the gambling sector’s evolution is constant and demands ongoing focus. I am excited to collaborate with Michel,” Rooij continued.

Before this role, Groothuizen was the head of the Netherlands Institute for Forensic Psychiatry and has spent the last fifteen years as a deputy judge at the Arnhem Court of Appeal. From 2001 to 2015, his career was intertwined with the ministry of justice and security, where he played a key role in creating the KSA in 2012 as the policy director.

Groothuizen reflected on his previous involvement with the gambling sector. “I’ve had a long-standing relationship with gambling policy. Starting in 2007, I played a key role in setting up the Gaming Authority, which we accomplished in 2012,” he noted. He also mentioned his earlier efforts on new laws to oversee online gambling. “We started drafting legislation to control online gambling several years ago. However, it took nearly a decade for the relevant law to be enacted, long after I had moved on,” Groothuizen explained.
