A new chapter was written in the annals of poker history at the 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour in Paris. Barny Boatman, a stalwart of British poker, outlasted an impressive field of 1,747 players to clinch the title at the €5,300 no-limit hold’em main event. Taking the victory home at 68, Boatman has become the oldest champion to ever win an EPT main event.
This victory didn’t just add another trophy to his cabinet; it also secured Boatman his largest-ever payout, €1,287,800 ($1,390,824 USD), towering over his previous best—a $546,080 prize from a bracelet event at the 2013 World Series of Poker. A member of the legendary UK poker ensemble, the Hendon Mob, Boatman’s career tournament earnings have now soared past $4.8 million.
Reflecting on his monumental win, Boatman shared his disbelief and joy, “This doesn’t feel real. It’s way the biggest result I’ve had in poker, nothing’s close,” he told reporters after his win, his words resonating with the magnitude of his accomplishment. “I’m just very happy. I’ve been in quite a few finals where I’ve never quite got the job done. All that was needed was for me to run like god, especially three-handed.”
The tournament, hosted at the prestigious Le Palais des Congrès de Paris, saw a staggering $9,038,000 in total prize money up for grabs, with the top 255 finishers each taking home a portion of the pot. This victory marks Boatman’s sixth tournament title, a collection that includes two World Series of Poker bracelets.
With this latest win at the EPT Main Event, Boatman inches closer to achieving the elusive Triple Crown of poker—a title that entails winning at the WSOP, EPT, and World Poker Tour (WPT) Main Events. Boatman himself sees this as a new horizon to conquer, “It’d be great to get a Triple Crown, obviously. Who wouldn’t want that? I’d love to go play the one [WPT World Championship] at the Wynn, which I haven’t played.”
“I feel kind of like vindicated a bit that I can play, you know, and I want to prove it’s not a fluke and do it again,” he added, hinting at more battles and potentially more victories ahead.
