In 2023, the US commercial gaming industry marked its third consecutive year of record-breaking revenue, achieving $66.5 billion, as reported by the American Gaming Association (AGA). This figure represents an increase from the $60.5 billion recorded in 2022, with significant growth observed in the final quarter of 2023. The industry witnessed its highest quarterly revenue of $17.4 billion in Q4 2023, culminating in December 2023 with the most profitable month in its history, generating $6.2 billion in revenue.

Breaking down the revenue sources, traditional gaming saw a 3.3% rise to $49.4 billion compared to the previous year, while iGaming revenue soared by 22.9% to $6.2 billion. Notably, sports betting reached new heights with a handle of $119.8 billion and revenue of $10.9 billion.

Online gaming accounted for 24.7% of the total commercial gaming revenue across the nation in 2023. Additionally, the commercial casino sector experienced expansion, with 12 of the top 20 markets reporting revenue increases over the prior year.

Commercial gaming operators contributed approximately $14.4 billion in direct gaming taxes, up 9.7% from 2022, showcasing the industry’s significant contribution to public finances.

AGA President and CEO Bill Miller reflected on the industry’s success and said:

“From the traditional casino experience to online options, American adults’ demand for gaming is at an all-time high.

“Sustaining our momentum will take unified industry efforts around combating pernicious illegal operators and growing responsible gambling efforts in tandem with the growth of the legal market – both of which the AGA is committed to lead on throughout 2024.

“Gaming’s success translates directly to the success of the states, cities and towns in which we operate. We are proud to be in 47 US jurisdictions, acting as economic drivers, creating jobs and providing the funding that makes critical public education programs, infrastructure projects, problem gambling resources and more possible.”
