Highlighting the issue, Perry pointed out the substantial size of the illegal sports betting market in Texas, estimating illegal bets to amount to $8.7 billion. He underscored the risks associated with these unregulated markets, including threats to personal information security and the lack of assurance regarding payouts. Perry’s argument for legalization centers on eliminating these offshore, illicit betting operations and creating a protected environment for consumers.
“The time has come to replace the offshore, illicit market for sports betting with a consumer-protected online sports betting market in Texas,” Perry stated, emphasizing the need for change, while also stressing the importance of implementing strict regulations to maintain the integrity of sports competitions, ensuring a safe and fair betting environment.
The push for legalization gains further legitimacy from the backing of Texas’ 11 major professional sports franchises, according to Perry. This widespread support suggests a significant demand for legal sports betting options among Texans.
Perry also highlighted the economic benefits of legalizing sports betting, suggesting it could generate up to $556 million annually for the state. Moreover, he noted the competitive disadvantage Texas faces as neighboring states like Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Mexico already benefit from legal sports betting revenues.
