Strategic Shift for Safer Gambling Standard Announced by GamCare

GamCare is set to reorganize the Safer Gambling Standard, transitioning it to operate independently from the charity. This decision, made in December by GamCare’s board, aims to enhance the program’s effectiveness. A comprehensive strategic review by the leadership team is in progress to guide this transition, with results to be shared in the future.

Established in 2019 and certified by UKAS, the Safer Gambling Standard assesses gambling companies’ efforts to minimize gambling-related harm. Amidst these changes, GamCare is closely examining a big issue with Gamesys, an online gambling operator, to determine compliance with the Standard’s requirements. This follows a £6m fine levied on Gamesys by the UK Gambling Commission for lapses in social responsibility and anti-money laundering measures between November 2021 and July 2022.

GamCare emphasizes the importance of transparency and adherence to regulations, stating, “all operators to provide accurate, up-to-date information, including of regulatory investigations, in line with the contract they sign.” The findings from the ongoing review concerning Gamesys are expected to be released soon.

Additionally, GamCare reaffirms its dedication to supporting those affected by gambling, stating, “Our core focus at GamCare will continue to be the provision of high-quality, accessible support to the thousands of people who come through our services each year, both those who are struggling with gambling directly as well as those who are affected by someone else’s gambling. All of GamCare’s work is focused on the reduction of gambling harms, as it has been for 26 years.”
