North Fork Mono Casino & Resort Receives Green Light for Construction

The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians marks a major accomplishment with the government approval of the North Fork Mono Casino & Resort project in California, the result of more than two decades of tenacious efforts. This significant achievement paves the way for the tribe to begin building later in 2024, capping an extensive administrative approval procedure.

Charlie Altekruse, the tribe’s spokeswoman, emphasizes that building is expected to begin within the year, even if the groundbreaking date and the terms of the construction finance are still to be announced. It is anticipated that work will be completed in 15 to 18 months, and then a revolutionary development between Madera and Chowchilla will be revealed.

“If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last 20 years, it’s that making hard claims about the timing has been fraught with challenges,” says Altekruse. “So, we haven’t set a specific time for groundbreaking, but we definitely expect it to happen this year.”

Strategic Partnership with Red Rock Resorts

The National Indian Gaming Commission’s approval of the Management Agreement between the North Fork Rancheria and SC Madera Management LLC, a subsidiary of Red Rock Resorts, signals a collaborative effort in developing and operating the casino. Red Rock Resorts, a Las Vegas-based entity, will play a pivotal role in assisting the tribe in bringing the North Fork Mono Casino & Resort to fruition.

This approval follows a series of legal hurdles faced by the tribe in obtaining state and federal endorsements for the casino, making it a testament to their resilience and determination.

The casino, which is envisioned as a massive 100,000 square foot establishment, would include more than 2,000 slot and video poker machines in addition to 40 gaming tables with well-known games including three-card poker, blackjack, and Pai Gow. With plenty of parking, simple access from Highway 99, and eating and drinking options, the project seeks to offer a holistic experience.

The North Fork Rancheria’s Chairperson, Fred Beihn, expressed his happiness with the acceptance of the Management Contract and emphasized Station Casinos’ dedication to upholding tribal sovereignty and optimizing the advantages of tribal gaming for the tribe and the community.

Expected to create more than 1,000 employment, the North Fork Mono Casino & Resort is a hub for hospitality and a gaming establishment that plays a major role in the local economy.
