A casino resort owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida is to be constructed by the Menominee Indian Tribe in collaboration with Hard Rock. In spite of fierce local resistance, Hard Rock has just introduced sports betting in Florida.
Long-term collaboration between Hard Rock and the Menominee Indian Tribe is necessary for their idea to become a reality, but legislative backing is still required. They require the city council’s approval before they can sell the tribe a crucial plot of property, but the process has stuck because the vote was postponed earlier this year.
Why the Menominee Indian Tribe Wants a Casino Resort
A 70,000-square-foot casino with 1,500 slot machines, 55 live dealer table games, and a sportsbook is what the tribe plans to construct.
In Wisconsin, the tribe is able to provide sports betting because of a tribal treaty with the state. The tribe is eager to seize this chance and collaborate with Hard Rock, a reputable company in the field.
The tribe believes that investing $360 million in a casino resort will be wise since it will help both the tribe and the neighborhood. Joey Awonohopay, the chairman of the Menominee Kenosha Gaming Authority, declared that the project is prepared to go.
“We plan to immediately secure funding to complete the construction.” The idea is to construct everything,” he stated. Still, this is not the first attempt at a casino resort that the tribe has attempted, nor is it the most grandiose.
Governor Scott Walker turned down the tribe’s earlier proposal to construct a casino resort because he opposed the state’s gaming laws being expanded. The governor was not persuaded to reconsider despite the tribe’s $800 million offer.
There are several obstacles in the way of the tribe’s strategy that must be cleared. To increase the tribe’s sovereignty, they must convince Kenosha to sell them 60 acres of city-owned property. However, the federal government will need to step in because the sale by itself is insufficient to include the area in the tribe’s jurisdiction.
In order to run a casino in the state, the tribe must also get Class III authorization, which they were unable to obtain under Walker’s leadership. Tony Evers, the current governor, could be more receptive to gambling, but it’s unclear if the tribe will be able to win him over.
Awonohopay is hopeful that the tribe can benefit the state and the city, and the tribe is working to increase public knowledge of the project’s advantages.
