KSA Funds Six Pioneering Projects to Curb Gambling Harm

Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch gambling authority, has made a calculated decision by pledging financial assistance to six innovative initiatives that aim to encourage safer gaming habits. This project is a crucial aspect of the ZonMw Prevention of Gambling Addiction research program, which is an extensive program that is essential to the Netherlands’ efforts to lessen the effects of problem gambling.

The study program’s first funding cycle has begun, according to the KSA, indicating a deliberate attempt to address the complexity of gambling-related suffering. These creative initiatives are supported financially by the Addiction Prevention Fund (VPF), which was founded in 2021. High-risk gaming operators donate an extra charge to support this fund.

Strategic Allocation of Funding

Under KSA management, the VPF has set forth precise budgetary objectives, such as conducting comprehensive studies on the negative effects of gambling and investigating preventative and remedial strategies. This most recent endeavor is in line with the larger goals of the ZonMw Prevention of Gambling Addiction research program, which was established in 2022 and has a 2029 roadmap.

A variety of projects have benefited from the money infusion; they include two projects from Amsterdam UMC, two from the Trimbos Institute, one from the University of Amsterdam, and one from the IVO. Every initiative takes a different tack when tackling various aspects of problems associated with gambling.

Applications of a comprehensive framework on gambling harms to the Dutch context, an investigation of the effects of gambling marketing on vulnerable groups, an assessment and innovation study on cognitive-behavioral treatment for gambling, an investigation of youth gambling characteristics, the development and testing of interventions for youth gambling problems, and a design study to establish guidelines for identifying and supporting at-risk and problem gamblers are among the projects that have been chosen.

This funding support highlights the cooperative efforts between research institutes and regulatory agencies with the goal of advancing novel solutions. With these initiatives scheduled to start in February 2024, the Dutch gambling scene is about to undergo a positive change that will highlight the country’s dedication to safer and more responsible gaming practices.
