The 24-hectare site in Boracay will not be turned into an integrated casino project, according to a recent statement by DigiPlus Interactive Corp, formerly known as Leisure and Resorts World Corp. This disclosure was filed to the Philippine Stock Exchange and is intended as “clarification of news reports.”
DigiPlus stated that carrying out their strategic transformation goal remained their major priority. They want to become recognized as one of the Philippines’ most technologically cutting-edge, inventive, and rapidly expanding digital entertainment companies. This change in emphasis signifies a substantial shift in the company’s course.
Albee Benitez’s Role in the Project
The founder and previous director of DigiPlus, the politician and businessman Albee Benitez of the Philippines, was prominently involved in conversations with Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. in 2017. These conversations were focused on a prospective partnership for a $500 million casino resort project for the well-known Philippine vacation island of Boracay.
Nevertheless, Leisure and Resorts World declared in late 2019 that it would be giving up its desire to collaborate with Galaxy Entertainment on the Boracay project. The company’s direction was significantly altered by this choice.
Mr. Benitez said on Monday that he was ready to resume discussions with Galaxy Entertainment over the Boracay project. Unfortunately, Galaxy Entertainment swiftly confirmed in a statement that they had no plans to bring up these negotiations again the following day.
DigiPlus said Tuesday that they were committed to growing the digital entertainment market. Since 2022, this sector has been their primary area of activity, indicating their intention to leave the casino business.
DigiPlus Interactive Corp is in charge of managing a number of companies, including AB Leisure Exponent Inc., which is wholly owned by the firm. AB Leisure Exponent Inc. ran 126 physical bingo halls as of June 30. DigiPlus also owns approximately 70% of First Cagayan Leisure and Resort Corp, a company that the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority has given permission to license and oversee online casinos and sports betting businesses that are registered in Cagayan.
