Basic roulette rules

There are three main roulette table layouts in current use: American, European and French. As the names suggest, these are layouts that are most common in the US, Europe and France, respectively. While the different wheels impact gameplay a fair bit, there are universal rules that apply across all three versions.

Firstly, all roulette wheels consist of a spinning disk with red, green and black divisions lining its edge. These divisions contain numbers ranging from 0 to 36. If you are playing American roulette, the divisions range from 00 to 36, meaning the wheel has one extra division. In all roulette wheels, the zero (and 00) is green, while the rest of the divisions are either colored red or black.

The game begins with players placing bets on where the ball will fall. The dealer then spins the wheel and sets a small ball spinning in the opposite direction. Eventually the ball lands on the wheel, and the players who bet on the right spot win. Winners collect their payouts, new bets are placed and the process repeats. This is essentially the entire game, although there are a couple of additional things to know before you sit down to play.

En Prison

Most commonly found in French roulette games, the En Prison rule allows players making an even-money bet to reclaim half their bet when the ball lands in a 0 spot. Alternatively, players can leave their bets as they lay (aka “in prison”). If the bet is left in play, the next spin is an all-or-nothing one for the player. If another 0 turns up, or the ball does not match the bet “en prison”, the entire bet amount is lost. If the ball position matches the player’s bet, the full amount is returned to them.

Strategies matter

You might not envision roulette as a particularly complicated game, and you’d be correct as the basic layout of the game is very simple. That doesn’t mean that there are no strategies that can help, however, with some being more effective than others. Oscar’s grind betting system is one of the best, as it allows players to plan out their bets ahead of time and manage their bankroll effectively.
