GamCare, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible gambling and preventing gambling-related harm, has reaffirmed its support for the implementation of a maximum stake limit for online slots. In a blog post, the organization presented evidence highlighting the addictive nature of online slots and the challenges they pose to vulnerable consumers.
GamCare has been collecting data to support its argument that online slots are highly addictive, making it difficult for susceptible individuals to control their gambling habits. The organization has proposed setting a maximum limit for online slot spins, ranging from £2 to £15, as a potential solution.
According to GamCare, 73% of the 5,660 callers to the National Gambling Helpline in 2022 reported issues with controlling their online gambling behavior, primarily linked to online slots. The organization emphasized that people often start playing slots for entertainment but can easily lose track of their spending when transitioning to online play. Implementing a maximum limit could help players manage their habits and prevent excessive losses.
GamCare cited the UK Government’s White Paper, which recommends focusing on additional safety measures for individuals aged 18 to 24. Evidence from the National Gambling Helpline indicated that the number of people attributing their gambling problems to online slots increased from 34% five years ago to 60% in 2022.
GamCare emphasized that imposing an online stake limit should be part of a broader safer gambling strategy encompassing all segments of the market. The organization proposed setting the maximum stake for online slots at £2 and implementing enhanced protection measures for individuals aged 18 to 24, who are scientifically more susceptible to inducements and developing problematic gambling behaviors.
GamCare also called for the £2 maximum stake to apply to all online games of chance, including roulette, blackjack, and craps. The organization believes that this stake limit can effectively reduce harm in society when combined with comprehensive measures to address problem gambling.
