Holland Casino, the Dutch state-owned gambling company, has exciting news for casino enthusiasts as they reveal plans for a brand-new location for their Groningen casino. The company has set its sights on Business Park Ter Borch, strategically positioned on the A7 highway, with the new facility anticipated to welcome visitors in 2027. Although the exact opening date remains under wraps, this development marks a significant step forward for the company, as outlined in a recent press release.
The journey towards this new chapter began six years ago, in 2017, when a devastating fire razed the Holland Casino located at Gedempte Kattendiep in Groningen, reducing the entire establishment to ashes. To bridge the gap, a year later, a temporary “pop-up” casino emerged in Sontplein.
Initially, the plan was for this temporary casino to hold the fort until 2021, after which the casino would return and be rebuilt at its original location on Gedempte Kattendiep. However, those plans never materialized, triggering a joint quest by Holland Casino and the local municipality to discover a more fitting home for the casino – a mission that has now concluded successfully.
The chosen location on the outskirts of Tynaarlo municipality ticked all the boxes for Holland Casino. It met the company’s stringent criteria, encompassing sustainability, architectural excellence, visitor accessibility, and ample parking space.
Petra de Ruiter, CEO of Holland Casino, expressed her enthusiasm about the new location, saying, “I’m looking forward to that and especially to the moment when the new Holland Casino Groningen is open. That is not only good news for our guests, but also for our employees. They will soon be able to optimally welcome guests from a new building and offer the hospitality that can be expected from us.”
Remarkably, just a year ago, there were no concrete leads on a suitable casino location. Almost miraculously, within a year, two potential sites emerged. The first contender, Europapark, garnered local political support, owing to its proximity to the temporary casino and the FC Groningen stadium. However, Holland Casino opted for the second location, positioned outside the municipal boundaries.
The chosen business park seamlessly connects to Groningen via the A7 highway, offering ideal conditions for adhering to Holland Casino’s architectural and sustainability standards. This strategic site, dubbed a “gateway” to Groningen, promises easy accessibility for guests and an abundance of parking space.
The Tynaarlo municipal council enthusiastically approved the casino’s construction, recognizing the employment opportunities it brings and its potential to boost tourism in the region. Jurryt Vellinga, Tynaarlo’s spatial planning councilor, noted, “This location offers employment opportunities and is a great boost for tourism in our municipality.”
While the spotlight is on the new location, plans for the old Gedempte Kattendiep site are not forgotten. Holland Casino extends its hand in cooperation with the Groningen municipality to ensure that the city center welcomes back something beautiful in the future.
Holland Casino expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “We are very grateful to Groningen and Tynaarlo for the efforts made to find a suitable location.” As anticipation builds for the opening of the new Holland Casino Groningen in 2027, the gaming community eagerly awaits the dawn of a new era.
