Martin Nielsen from the Faroe Islands has won 2023 WSOP Event #97: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold’em. The event, hosted at both Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, saw Nielsen take home his debut World Series of Poker gold bracelet and a tidy sum of $270,160.
This high-roller event attracted a notable ensemble of 106 entrants, amassing a substantial prize pool of $895,300. Despite the fierce competition, Nielsen, a native of the Faroe Islands, proved to be an undeniable force. Among the challengers he faced were world-renowned poker talents, such as Hall of Famer John Juanda.
The decisive moment came in the form of a head-to-head duel between Nielsen and Hong Wei Yu. Specializing in short-deck games, Nielsen managed to maneuver his way to victory.
Post-match, a baffled Nielsen expressed his surprise at his calmness throughout the event. He stated, “It’s so weird, though, I thought I would be nervous. I don’t know, I am a full-time short-deck cash player, but I mostly play online on GG.”
The final heads-up saw Nielsen pitted against Yu, with Nielsen holding a substantial 3:1 chip lead. In an intense exchange lasting around 15 minutes, both players pushed their chips to the center of the table. Yu wielded jack-ten of spades, whereas Nielsen held pocket kings. An initial draw of queen-eight-six-ten with two spades saw Yu with multiple chances to win. However, a non-eventful ten draw on the river saw him fall as runner-up, crowning Nielsen as the undisputed champion and gold bracelet holder.
