Maceiras Lapido in the Lead as 2023 WSOP Main Event Moves into Final Stage

The 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Main Event is approaching its climax, as the field of players, initially a whopping 10,043, has been whittled down to just 15. The remaining competitors have already secured a minimum payout of $430,200 and are only 14 steps away from the coveted championship bracelet and the whopping $12.1 million top prize. While odds for a first Indian Main Event Winner started to look increasingly better during the early hours of day 7, the country’s hope for victory, Anirban Das, was eliminated in 16th place a little after midnight local time in Vegas.

At the close of day 7, Juan Maceiras Lapido emerged as the chip leader, boasting 108,000,000 in his stack. The Spanish poker pro is in excellent form, as the only player to cross the 100-million chip threshold and holding nearly 18% of the total chips in play.

Lapido isn’t new to poker successes. He bagged a fifth place in the 2011 European Poker Tour Grand Final Main Event, adding $467,532 to his winnings.

Adam Walton of California follows Lapido closely, possessing the second-largest stack of 79,475,000. Walton scored the last knockout of the day, defeating Anirban Das with a flopped house over a turned flush. Walton’s past winnings total $951,000, including a 42nd place finish in the 2021 Main Event.

Germany’s Jan-Peter Jachtmann is sitting comfortably in third place with 70,775,000 chips. As the winner of the 2021 WSOP $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship event, Jachtmann boasts over $1.2 million in previous cashes.

The race also includes several other poker stalwarts like Toby Lewis, a 2010 EPT Vilamoura champion and 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event winner with 50,000,000 chips. Daniel Weinman, a two-time WPT Main Event champion and bracelet winner, is still in the run with 21,750,000 chips, along with Alec Torelli, the 2008 WSOP Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship runner-up, with 14,275,000.

Day 7 started with 49 players, and 34 of them faced elimination before the gameplay was paused. The day saw prominent players like Mitchell Halverson, Sam Stein, Masato Yokosawa, Raj Vohra, Maurice Hawkins, Matthew Wantman, Gabi Livshitz, and Ryan Tosoc knocked out.

Ryan Tosoc’s journey ended when his pocket sixes couldn’t outperform Jachtmann’s pocket tens. Tosoc has to his credit nearly $5.7 million in recorded earnings. Andrey Pateychuk, a WPT champion and European Poker Tour Main Event winner, also hit the rail in 17th place, losing to Juan Maceiras Lapido’s pocket kings with his pocket threes.

Day 8 will commence at 2:00 PM local time, with blinds of 400,000-800,000 and a big blind ante of 800,000 for level 36. The average stack size of 40,172,000 will equate to just over 50 big blinds when the action resumes, with the objective of playing down to the final table of nine.
