On July 10, 2023, the highly awaited City of Dreams Mediterranean casino opened its doors, marking a key milestone for Cyprus and the European integrated resort scene. This ambitious project, with a staggering expenditure of more than €600 million, intends to position Cyprus as a major luxury destination, attracting both tourists and international business and conference events. While the resort provides several amenities and luxury experiences, it is not without controversy, with two unions representing the resort’s employees raising concerns over workers’ rights.
The first integrated resort in Europe has become a reality after years of rigorous planning and building. The City of Dreams Mediterranean casino demonstrates Cyprus’ ambition to strengthening its position in the European market. The resort, which boasts a significant investment and unrivalled elegance, is prepared to enchant visitors from all over the world.
Lawrence Ho, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Melco Resorts & Entertainment, spoke at the opening ceremony on the company’s goal for the City of Dreams Mediterranean. The resort’s integration of local culture, hospitality, and beauty with a unique and immersive type of entertainment and experience was highlighted by Ho. The resort’s goal is to give an extraordinary combination of luxury, entertainment, and unrivalled service.
Grant Johnson, Property Manager of City of Dreams Mediterranean, thanked the country’s inhabitants for their assistance in making this huge endeavor a reality. Johnson also thanked his coworkers for their persistent dedication and hard work during the development process, which ensured that guests had a really magnificent experience.
The fourteen-story integrated casino resort has 500 elegantly designed rooms and suites for customers looking for the ultimate in luxury. In addition to the lodgings, the resort has designer-brand stores, cutting-edge sporting facilities, and a stunning outdoor amphitheater. Families may enjoy the adventure park, while business and professional meetings can be held in the conference and exhibition areas. Of course, the resort has an excellent casino, as well as a variety of exquisite eating alternatives.
In the midst of the splendor of the City of Dreams Mediterranean, two unions representing resort employees have raised concerns about workers’ rights. The Pancyprian Federation of Labor (Peo) and the Democratic Labor Federation of Cyprus (Deok) charged the corporation with breaking labor rules intended to protect employees. According to the unions, their efforts were greeted with opposition, preventing them from accessing the resort.
To demonstrate their dissatisfaction, the unions initially planned a protest on July 11, coinciding with the visit of the resort’s media representatives. Deok, on the other hand, decided to withdraw from the protest while still voicing their concerns. The union emphasized in their statement the need for the corporation to recognize that its operations take place on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus and that it should not act as an independent entity.
Peo, on the other hand, went forward with the planned protest, declaring their commitment to continue protesting until the firm granted them access to the workplace.
