The 2023 World Series of Poker’s main event has officially raised the stakes to new heights. The event, with its prestigious $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament, has remarkably outpaced previous runnings. As of 1:00 PM on Day 1D, the registration count stood at an impressive 8,846, surpassing the previous record set nearly 17 years ago.
The 2006 WSOP main event, held on July 31, previously held the record with 8,773 players. This tournament generated a sizable prize pool amounting to $82,512,162. Jamie Gold, the top player, earned a historic reward of $12,000,000, the highest main event prize at that time.
This year’s main event, already teeming with 5,234 entries from the initial three starting days and another 3,612 on Day 1D, shows potential to shatter Gold’s record-breaking prize. The registration period is still ongoing, which means the number of participants, and consequently the prize pool, is set to rise further.
An important highlight is the late-registration opportunity that extends into the first four hours of play on Saturday, July 8. This spans the start of level 8 on Day 2ABC and Day 2D, creating a window for interested players to join the bustling tournament.
Currently, an estimated $82.2 million, contributed from $9,300 of each buy-in, makes up the unofficial prize pool. In the upcoming hours and days, additional funds will inflate this amount, sparking anticipation for an immense final prize pool.
This year’s WSOP, hosted at the renowned Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas, is focused on achieving record-breaking numbers. The vision was communicated by Executive Director Ty Stewart, who referenced the positive momentum from last year’s successful debut on the Las Vegas Strip.
Ty Stewart shared, “With the momentum generated from the WSOP’s debut on the Las Vegas Strip last year, we expect a record-breaking WSOP and world championship at Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas in 2023.” His optimistic forecast was a rallying call to all poker enthusiasts, adding, “If the main event is on your bucket list, this is the year to get to Vegas.”
In light of the robust registration count and expanding prize pool, the 2023 World Series of Poker main event is rapidly progressing to redefine the history of the game. As participants and spectators eagerly anticipate the final prize announcement, it is clear that this event is set to exceed all expectations.
