The 2023 World Series of Poker welcomed a record 1,295 entrants for Event #67: $1,000 Ladies Championship. The unprecedented participation led to a prize pool of $1,152,550. Claiming the lion’s share of this reward was Tamar Abraham from Cypress, California. She pocketed $192,167 and secured her first WSOP gold bracelet.
Abraham’s victory stands as her largest live tournament payout. She previously cashed in this event in 2018 and 2021, ranking 30th and 45th respectively. Her latest win boosted her career earnings to over $218,000.
Alongside the seven finalists, many prominent players like Melissa Schubert, Tiffany Michelle, Maria Lampropulos, Jessica Teusl, and Samantha Abernathy also cashed in. However, it was Shiina Okamoto who led the final day with Abraham mid-field.
Abraham’s game picked up after she doubled up against Okamoto and then outplayed Tara Cain. Okamoto then eliminated Mary Dvorkin and Abraham took out Suzanne Malavet. Naqm Nguyen fell to Okamoto, setting up a heads-up showdown with Abraham in a strong lead.
The final hand saw Okamoto limp in with 54 and Abraham checked with 103. The flop brought 1052. Abraham check-raised out of position, and Okamoto called with her middle pair. The Q turn handed Abraham a flush draw to her pair of tens. When Okamoto moved all in, Abraham called and the 6 river gave her a flush, the pot, and the title.
Okamoto settled for runner-up and a payout of $118,768, her highest live tournament win to date.
