The World Series of Poker (WSOP) on Friday night celebrated another maiden win. This time it was William Kopp who hit the jackpot in a showdown against Michael Rodrigues, securing his first WSOP gold bracelet and bagging the $259,549 first-place prize in Event #66: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better. Kopp, an Ohio native, managed to defeat 1,125 competitors on his journey to the title.
With his recent triumph, Kopp adds to his already impressive $1 million career-tournament earnings. Notably, this victory also places him in a unique club with his sister, Katie Kopp, who previously clinched the 2022 Casino Employees Event. This win represents Kopp’s eighth cash of the series, and importantly, it’s his biggest one to date.
“It feels really good, especially since my best friend won a bracelet this year and my sister won one last year,” Kopp told reporters after his win.
Day 3 of the tournament was characterized by rapid-fire activity, including multiple double-ups involving Mike Linster, Anthony Zinno, and Philipp Krieger, which significantly cut into Kopp’s initial stack. However, despite the losses and the fast pace set by increasing blinds, Kopp bounced back quickly, eliminating both Krieger and Yuval Bronshtein. This swift turnaround restored his chip lead and set the stage for the final table.
The decisive heads-up duel featured Kopp against Rodrigues. Even though Rodrigues initially held a substantial chip lead, Kopp displayed consistent aggression, gradually whittling down Rodrigues’ stack. The critical hand arrived when Kopp took a major lead with a six-high straight and nut low, leaving Rodrigues in a challenging position. A few hands later, Kopp capitalized on Rodrigues’ misfortune of a flopped flush draw falling flat against his Broadway straight, bringing the tournament to a close.
