After an almost seven-hour battle on the final table, Robert Schulz took the win after beating Julien Sitbon heads-up, claiming the top prize of $675,275 in the Event #59: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout, at the 2023 World Series of Poker.
Set at the iconic Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, the event attracted a considerable crowd. With a staggering turnout of 1,598 players, the stakes and the prize pool escalated to an unprecedented $4,266,660, surpassing the previous record.
Known for his frequent high-stakes final tables, Schulz holds an impressive record with over a million dollars earnings as per his Hendon Mob profile. Still, this victory has become the crown jewel in his illustrious career. The nerve-wracking high stakes couldn’t perturb the steely nerves of this unyielding German competitor.
Assembled around the table was a diverse group of players hailing from nine different countries. While enthusiastic fans ardently supported their representatives, Schulz’s focus remained unwavering, setting his sights firmly on the ultimate goal.
The final table witnessed Shon Aroeti’s first exit when his ace-ten fell to Schulz’s superior ace-king. Jesse Lonis and Kunal Patni followed suit. Nazar Buhaiov, too, was undone by Schulz’s ace-king. Robert Burlacu succumbed next, with Dario Sammartino following after Barak Wisbrod’s game-ending ace.
Wisbrod, however, fell to Sitbon’s pocket eights and came in fourth. James Mendoza, finishing third, experienced a crucial match with Schulz that left Schulz in an unbeatable lead over Sitbon, the second runner-up.
The triumphant Schulz saw his live poker tournament earnings soar past the $1.76 million mark, propelling him to the 37th position in Germany’s all-time money list. Based on his outstanding performance, it is clear that Schulz’s presence at the final table of future WSOP events is more a matter of “when” than “if”.
