Kick.com, a streaming platform that has received support from pro-gambling supporters, is running into difficulties after being outlawed in Greece. The platform’s liberal position on gambling content looks to conflict with specific market restrictions.
Kick arose as an alternative to Twitch, an Amazon-owned streaming site, following modifications to Twitch’s gambling content regulations. Kick, founded by the founders of Stake.com, promises to provide users with a censorship-free environment that encourages freedom of expression and content production.
Renowned gambling streamers such as Tyler Faraz Niknam, better known as Trainwreckstv, have relocated to Kick, providing their support to the platform’s efforts to compete with Twitch. Trainwreckstv, formerly one of Twitch’s top Slots streamers, publicly stated his displeasure with the platform’s new restrictions.
Greece Implements Restrictions on Kick’s Lenient Approach
Kick’s attractiveness stems from its lenient policies and appealing cash incentives. However, it is precisely because of these lax restrictions that the site has been restricted in Greece.
Kick users in Greece suddenly realized that they could no longer access the service. When they checked the Hellenic Gaming Commission’s gaming blacklist, they discovered that the streaming site had been blacklisted, with the Slots Gang part mentioned as the reason for the restriction.
Other nations may follow Greece’s lead in barring Kick, as some governments have strong gambling content rules. Nonetheless, it is unclear how Kick will manage this difficult regulatory environment.
Kick Aims to Surpass Twitch’s Dominance
Despite the setback, Kick is still determined to outperform Twitch in terms of popularity. The platform’s creators have gone to great lengths to attract some of the most notable gaming celebrities, thereby undercutting its opponent.
Kick recently signed Félix “xQc” Lengyel to a record-breaking $100 million contract. Amouranth also revealed her decision to join Kick, however the financial terms of her deal with the company were not disclosed.
While Kick has a long way to go before dethroning Twitch, it is a significant challenge that Amazon should not dismiss. Twitch is presently competing with Kick and YouTube Gaming, all of which are trying to capture a larger portion of the streaming business. Although Twitch presently reigns supreme, its competitors are increasing in strength and pose a substantial challenge to the Amazon-owned platform’s domination.
While Kick’s liberal policies may be good, they may also be a double-edged sword. Only time will tell how this novel strategy will alter the platform’s success and the streaming business as a whole.
