The $2,000 No-Limit Hold’em Event #37 at the 2023 World Series of Poker was an intense three-day affair. In the end, it was Yuan Li from China who came out on top, proudly donning the WSOP bracelet at the prestigious Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. The journey wasn’t easy, but Li skillfully navigated his way, defeating Jonathan Camara in the final heads-up play. The victory pocketed him a hefty $524,777 and his first-ever career bracelet.
This WSOP event, in its second consecutive year, attracted a large crowd. A staggering 1,962 competitors joined, resulting in a prize pool worth $3,492,360. But Yuan Li, with over $1.5 million in career tournament earnings, entered the competition in prime position. He held the lead for a considerable part of the event and maintained an aggressive game, eventually taking home the title.
Li mostly plays his tournaments on the TJPT or elsewhere in Southeast Asia. His last tournament win dates back from 2016 when he won the HK$ 480,000 + 20,000 No Limit Hold’em – Super High Roller (Event #8) at the 2016 Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) in Macau, good for a price of $ 863,865.
Just as the previous year, the tournament was a magnet for some of the world’s most seasoned and skilled players. Prominent figures making substantial progress included 2009 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada, three-time bracelet winner Jim Collopy, and four-time WSOP bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche.
The Final Table Drama
The unofficial final table commenced with ten participants. The first elimination happened quickly. Darryl Ronconi, the shortest stack, was virtually all-in from the big blind. Jeremy Joseph outdid Ronconi, pushing him out in tenth place.
Following this, Frank Weigel took a bold move with an ace-deuce but unfortunately, was outmatched by Pavels Spirins’ pocket tens, signaling the end of his journey.
An extended break allowed the PokerGO team to set up live stream cards-up coverage. The return to play saw Yuriy Boyko, James Kraetz, Mark Seif, and Patrick Truong engage in fierce gameplay. Notably, Seif held the chip lead for a part of the day but eventually fell out of the game after failing to trump Joseph’s queens.
A series of tense showdowns between Truong, Spirins, Li, and Camara followed. Ultimately, it boiled down to a duel between Li and Camara. They were nearly equal in chips, and the game was 70 big blinds deep. After an extended back-and-forth, Li secured a pair of pocket jacks, forcing Camara to shove his pocket eights. Li’s full house led to Camara being left with only a single T-25,000 chip.
The Final Hand
On the concluding hand of the evening, Li solidified his victory with his ten-nine triumphing over Camara’s seven-six. This final play assured Yuan Li’s place as the champion of Event #37 at the 2023 WSOP.
