Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore praised the accomplishments of Singapore’s two integrated resorts (IRs) since their founding in 2010 during a speech at the Nikkei Forum’s 28th Future of Asia. Wong emphasized the substantial economic benefits that these resorts have generated, establishing Singapore as a well-known international travel destination.
He also promised to assist Japan in creating its own integrated resort and gaming sector, highlighting the opportunity for mutual learning between the two governments.
Following his speech, Wong participated in a Q&A session where he discussed regional political issues, the value of cooperation among ASEAN countries, and the pursuit of economic success.
Wong emphasized the difference between Singapore’s integrated resorts and simple casinos when asked for advise for Japan regarding the introduction of casinos. He said, “In Singapore, we refer to the casinos as integrated resorts since it has never been simply about the casinos. The main goal was to construct an integrated resort with a wide range of amenities that we could not have done without the casino and that would ultimately result in the creation of numerous additional jobs for Singaporeans. Since then, we have reaped the benefits.
In addition to providing economic benefits, Singapore’s integrated resorts, Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, have improved the city-state’s reputation as a center for top-notch entertainment and lifestyle options around the world.
In response to worries about compulsive gambling, Wong agreed that problems might occur but emphasised that Singapore has put in place strong protections to handle the situation. These steps include programmes to stop addiction and compulsive gambling as well as the creation of a regulating body.
Wong underlined Singapore’s eagerness to share its knowledge and experiences with Japan’s forthcoming integrated resort development in Osaka. As the sector develops, he emphasized the value of learning from one another’s experiences. While Casinos Austria’s second project in Nagasaki has the potential to be developed, the industry is eagerly awaiting the outcome of the approval of Osaka’s integrated resort.
