Canadian poker wizard Michael Watson has proven himself a formidable force in 2023, relentlessly dominating the final tables. Out of the seven final appearances so far this year, Watson has secured the champion’s title in four tournaments. His most recent triumph was at the Triton Super High Roller Series North Cyprus where he bested 33 other entrants in the $30,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha event, walking away with a first prize of $347,000.
Two Time EPT Winner
Just weeks before this notable victory, Watson won the European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo, clinching the €5,300 main event with a prize of $801,885. This was his second EPT main event title. Watson’s phenomenal performance has already made him over $3.1 million in earnings this year.
Watson’s Triton Poker Victories
Watson’s success extends beyond these recent triumphs. He now holds two Triton Poker titles to his name, having earlier clinched a victory in the $50,000 buy-in short deck event at the Triton Vietnam festival in March, taking home a remarkable $695,000. This World Poker Tour champion and Toronto native’s lifetime tournament earnings now exceed an astonishing $21 million.
The PLO event unfolded over two days at the luxurious Merit Royal Diamond Hotel & Spa, where only the top six competitors would finish in the money. Watson went into the heads-up play with a slight lead over Lyubovetskiy.
In the final hand, Watson successfully increased his advantage over Lyubovetskiy. Despite Lyubovetskiy having a strong hand, Watson managed to come out on top. The pivotal moment came when Watson landed queens up and the lead on the turn and held on to secure the pot and the title on the river. Lyubovetskiy, meanwhile, earned $239,500 for his second-place finish. Watson’s masterful performance cements his status as one of the strongest poker tournament players around, showing excellent form heading into the WSOP.
