Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Michael Soyza is quickly becoming a hot name in the poker world. As part of the Natural8 Poker Team, Soyza has already scored an incredible $14,569,514 in live poker career winnings. This figure places him third on Malaysia’s list of all-time top earners in poker. And judging by his latest performances, it won’t be long before he make it to the number one spot.
Soyza has been on fire in 2023. He kicked off with a bang on March 8, scoring second place in the $100,000 Main Event at the Triton Super Series in Hoi An, Vietnam, which pocketed him a massive $2,207,000. Then, just over two months later, he was back in the limelight. This time he took first place at the $75,000 buy-in NL Hold’em event at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Cyprus, winning $1,735,000. These two big wins once again confirm that Soyza has got what it takes to compete with the best.
Soyza isn’t a one-hit-wonder. He’s proved time and time again that he’s got the skill and the nerve to win big tournaments. Here’s a quick look at his top tournament wins.
But Soyza isn’t just about playing poker. He’s also involved in the business side of things. He’s one of the owners of the Asian Poker Tour (APT), Asia’s most prestigious poker tour. Started in 2008, the APT is all about promoting poker across Asia and has held some big-time tournaments over the years.
The latest APT series held in Taipei, Taiwan from April 28 to May 7 was a game-changer. It smashed all previous records, making the Main Event the biggest tournament held in Asia since live tournaments stopped running in Macau. The Main Event pulled in a huge 1,434 entries and a prize pool of more than $2 million. The winner was Thai poker pro Punnat Punsri, who walked away with a record-breaking $365,270 first prize.
The APT isn’t about to slow down, either. The next series kicks off in Hanoi, Vietnam on May 26 and runs until June 4. Expect the APT to keep growing its poker action with bigger fields, larger buy-ins and higher guaranteed prizes!
Despite his success, Soyza hasn’t let it go to his head. He’s still just as approachable and down-to-earth as ever. He often shares updates and behind-the-scenes stuff on social media. You can follow him on Twitter (@MichaelSoyza) and Instagram (@michaelsoyza).
