Macau’s allure as a destination resulted in an impressive 2.27 million visitors gracing its shores in April. This number marked a substantial 16.2% growth compared to the previous month and an impressive 274.7% surge compared to the same period last year. Of these visitors, a staggering 61% – approximately 1.39 million – hailed from mainland China, as per recent updates from the Statistics and Census Service.
Mainland China holds a vital position in bolstering Macau’s hospitality and casino gaming sectors. The 1.39 million arrivals from this region highlight a 159.3% increase year-on-year and a 12.0% growth compared to the previous month.
Individual Visit Scheme Visas and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area
The data revealed that of the mainland visitors, 817,730 utilized Individual Visit Scheme visas to enter Macau. Further, a total of 27.1% of mainland visitors, translating to 616,602 individuals, came from nine cities within the Guangdong province, contributing to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
April’s visitor statistics showed that arrivals from Hong Kong experienced an unprecedented year-on-year growth of 1,039.0%, totaling 745,282. This figure also represents a 19.8% sequential growth.
Public Holidays
Both Hong Kong and mainland China celebrated public holidays in April. Mainland China observed the Ching Ming Festival on April 5, alongside the two-day Labour Day break at the month’s end. Meanwhile, Hong Kong celebrated the Ching Ming Festival and the Easter break from April 7 to 10. These holidays likely contributed to the surge in visitor count.
Overseas Visitors and Stay Duration
April also saw foreign visitors representing roughly 5.0% of the total visitor count. The highest numbers were from the Philippines, Indonesia, and South Korea.
Nearly half of the visitors, about 1.18 million, stayed overnight in Macau. The average duration of stay in April was 1.2 days, with overnight visitors staying for 2.2 days, and same-day visitors staying for 0.3 of a day.
An Encouraging Start to 2023
During the first four months of 2023, Macau greeted 7.22 million visitors, marking a 190.8% increase from the same period in the prior year. This figure equals about 52% of the total number of visitors during the corresponding period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic. This data showcases a promising trend in Macau’s tourism resurgence.
