The Grand Opening of West Bay Casino and Resort
After years of planning and construction, West Bay Casino and Resort finally welcomed the public on Tuesday. The ambitious project began in 2016 as a collaboration between the State of Oklahoma and the Chickasaw Nation. Although the grand opening was briefly interrupted by a report of smoke in the building, the celebrations continued. Built on the former site of the Texoma State Lodge, which was destroyed in 2009, the casino is expected to provide 170 jobs and generate nearly $58 million in revenue for the state during its first year alone.
A Boost to Tourism and the Local Economy
Situated near Catfish Bay Marina and spread across 61 acres, the new casino boasts ten popular tourist cabins. With approximately six million tourists visiting Lake Texoma each year, the casino is set to attract even more visitors, bolstering the local economy. As Cody Maynard, Oklahoma House District 21 representative, explains, the increased foot traffic will benefit local businesses, from restaurants to retail outlets. The Chickasaw Nation projects that the casino will generate about $168 million in revenue over the next five years.
A Landmark Project
The U.S. Department of Interior approved the casino project in October 2020, transferring the land into a federal trust. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the 9,600-square-foot casino was built, complete with a 40-room hotel and ten rental cabins. The resort offers guests a restaurant, lounge, retail space, meeting rooms, an outdoor pool, a fitness center, and a business center.
Chickasaw Nation’s Casino Empire
The Chickasaw Nation already operates several casinos in Oklahoma, including Riverstar Casino, Treasure Valley Casino, and Gold Mountain Casino. The addition of West Bay Casino and Resort further strengthens their presence in the state’s gaming industry.
