Detroit casinos recorded a $6.8 million sports betting handle, a drop of 29.2% year-over-year. The slump reflected a quiet period before the start of the NFL regular season on September 4, when wagering typically spikes.

Casinos in Detroit sent $8.6 million in state gaming taxes during August. On top of that, they contributed another $12.6 million in wagering taxes and development payments to the City of Detroit.

For sports betting specifically, the three properties generated $46,903 in state taxes and $57,326 in city wagering taxes. While these figures remain small compared to table games and slots, regulators anticipate stronger activity with football season underway.

With the NFL season underway now, Michigan regulators expect retail sports betting to rebound. MGM Grand, MotorCity, and Hollywood Greektown will be aiming to turn around August’s softer results as they capitalize on football-driven handle increases.
