Maryland Casino Revenue Slips in August

Maryland casinos posted a dip in gaming revenue for August, though not every property saw declines. The numbers come as sports betting operator bet365 prepares to enter the state, adding a new layer of competition to an already active gaming market.

Good to know

  • Maryland casinos generated $170.3m in gaming revenue, down 2.1% from last year.
  • $52.4m was directed to the Education Trust Fund.
  • MGM National Harbor led the market but recorded a drop of 6.5%.

While the overall take was slightly lower than in August 2024, some casinos still showed growth. The state’s Education Trust Fund remained a key beneficiary, taking in more than $52m from gaming contributions.

Of the six licensed casinos in Maryland, MGM National Harbor continued to lead with $70.1m, although that was down 6.5% year-over-year. Live! Casino and Hotel, with the largest slot floor in the state at 3,844 machines, came close with $63.2m, a 2.1% increase compared to last year.

Horseshoe Casino Baltimore posted $15.1m, up 4.4%, while Ocean Downs Casino grew 3.7% to reach $10.3m. On the other side, Hollywood Casino Perryville saw the steepest decline, falling 13% to $6.7m. Rocky Gap Casino Resort stayed nearly flat, reporting $4.9m, down just 1.1%.

In total, video lottery terminals (slots) contributed $118.2m, while table games generated $52m. Slots remain the dominant revenue driver in the state.

Casinos sent $72.2m back to the state in August, with $52.4m specifically earmarked for the Education Trust Fund. That figure plays a key role in funding schools and education programs across Maryland.

Other allocations covered local impact grants, horse racing, and small business programs, continuing the model where casino gaming supports a broad mix of state initiatives.

The revenue update arrived just as the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency approved bet365 for launch. The operator will soon begin taking bets in Maryland, which becomes its 15th state of operation in the U.S. Maryland Lottery has also launched a new responsible gambling campaign last week, including videos.
