After more than 30 years on the water, Hollywood Casino’s riverboat in Joliet is about to call it a day. The long-running riverboat venue is set to shut down on July 29, clearing the way for a much-anticipated $185 million land-based casino, which is expected to open on August 11—if final regulatory checks go through.
For many in the area, the transition marks the end of an era that began back in the early 1990s, when Illinois’ Riverboat Gambling Act first allowed gaming on water.
Good to know
The existing riverboat, which opened as Empress Casino, was part of Illinois’ original riverboat casino wave. Over time, changes to state law—first in 1999, then again in 2019—allowed operators to move onto land, leading to this shift.
Until its final day, the riverboat will continue to run normal hours. The adjacent hotel will stay open for guests until July 26.
Jay Snowden, President and CEO of PENN Entertainment, looked back on the property’s legacy while also sharing excitement for the new chapter:
“As we transition to our new state-of-the-art facility, we reflect on 30+ years of operating in Joliet. We look forward to continuing to create best-in-class experiences for our loyal customers, welcoming new guests, and supporting this community for years to come.”
The new Hollywood Casino Joliet will sit within the Rock Run Collection, a mixed-use development near I-80 and I-55. Once open, it will feature 1,000 slots, 43 table games, a baccarat room, high-limit areas, and an ESPN BET sportsbook.
Dining and entertainment are getting a big upgrade as well. Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis will bring Sorellina, a laid-back Italian eatery, to the property. The Boulevard Food & Drink Hall will spotlight Chicagoland staples like Antique Taco, Pretty Cool Ice Cream, and Lucky Goat—a burger concept from Stephanie Izard. A café and full-service bar will round out the options.
More than 1,300 parking spots and a 10,000-square-foot event center will also be included in the new setup. A special dining event featuring De Laurentiis is planned for mid-August.
Ruben Warren, the casino’s Vice President and General Manager, invited longtime guests to stop by before the riverboat closes:
“We thank all of our guests, loyalty members, and team members who have made our riverboat location special over the last 30 years and invite them to visit the riverboat one last time before July 29.”
Guests will be able to redeem riverboat chips at the new casino cage through December 31, 2025. Nearby PENN properties, including Hollywood Casino Aurora and Ameristar East Chicago, will continue operating as usual under the PENN Play rewards program.
Hollywood Casino Joliet will also launch a new website on July 29, offering restaurant menus, hours, reservation tools, and more event details.
