Teachers in Brazil Could Soon Be Trained to Spot Gambling Harm

Piauí may soon become the first Brazilian state to tackle gambling addiction education head-on in classrooms. A new proposal under review aims to roll out a school program focused on the risks of gambling and online betting.

The initiative, called Fim de Jogo (which translates to “End of the Game”), was introduced by State Deputy Dr Hélio Oliveira. If approved, the state’s Department of Education would lead the program, working closely with teachers, health experts, and support networks to help students understand how gambling can impact their lives.

Good to know

  • Fim de Jogo would be coordinated by the Department of Education in Piauí.
  • The proposal focuses on issues like depression, addiction, and social isolation.
  • Teachers would receive special training to spot signs of harmful tech use among students.

Rather than waiting for problems to develop, the plan takes a proactive approach. The program would teach kids and teenagers about topics like compulsive behavior, sleep disorders, and gambling-related mental health concerns. These lessons would be baked into everyday school content, with age-appropriate materials designed to inform, not frighten.

The bill also calls for in-school lectures, awareness campaigns, and workshops to give the topic more visibility. Educators would receive support to help them recognize red flags in students—especially in a time when social media influencers, some of them underage, are casually promoting online betting.

One part of the plan stands out: partnerships with healthcare and psychology groups. These outside experts could step in to provide guidance to both students and their families, adding an extra layer of support.

Annual reviews would help keep the program effective, with adjustments made based on how students are responding. Right now, the bill is being looked over by technical committees in the state legislature. If it moves forward, the state government will decide whether to make it official.
