Philip Sternheimer finally closed the deal after years of near misses at the World Series of Poker. In Event #36: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship, he secured his first WSOP bracelet and collected $763,087 after defeating a deep and experienced field.
Good to know
For Philip Sternheimer, this win was long overdue. He had reached five previous WSOP final tables in events like 10-game, H.O.R.S.E., dealer’s choice, and even this same split-pot Omaha variant. Each time, he had fallen short of winning the gold. On Friday, that pattern came to an end.
The heads-up phase of Event #36 began at the very start of Day 4 with just two players left: Sternheimer and Bruno Furth. The first hand ended in a chop, but Sternheimer eventually took control of the match.
Momentum briefly swung toward Furth, but Sternheimer responded with a game-changing scoop in a pot worth 18 million chips. Holding top two-pair and a strong low draw, Sternheimer watched as the river gave him the nut low and sealed a full scoop.
Although Furth managed to double up again, he never regained the lead. The final hand played out on a queen-high flop, where Sternheimer had flopped top set and ended with a full house, locking in the bracelet and sending Furth to second place.
Every player among the top eight had already tasted WSOP success. Shaun Deeb and Brian Hastings aimed to collect their seventh bracelets but ended up third and fourth respectively. Three-time winner Christopher Vitch (5th) and two-time winner Sam Soverel (7th) also went deep.
