With the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship set for April 7, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is urging residents to bet responsibly and stick to licensed platforms. The regulator has raised concerns about the dangers of using offshore gambling sites, especially as interest in betting peaks during March Madness.
Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, highlighted the issue in a public message:
“As millions of fans gear up to watch the NCAA Championship, we want to remind Michigan residents to enjoy March Madness safely and legally by placing their bets on licensed platforms.
“Betting on illegal, offshore websites exposes you to risks such as fraud, unfair play and a lack of responsible gaming support.
“It’s critical that bettors use platforms regulated by the state to protect themselves and their personal information.”
The reminder comes shortly after the MGCB sent cease-and-desist letters to twelve offshore sites in March. Those platforms were offering online casino-style games without proper authorization, targeting Michigan players in violation of state law.
Michigan law requires all sports betting operators to be tied to a licensed casino. These can be one of the state’s three commercial casinos or any of the twelve federally recognized tribes running Class III gaming operations. These rules fall under Michigan’s Lawful Sports Betting Act, which was created to protect players and maintain a safe betting environment.
The MGCB encourages users to check the license status of any platform through its official website. Doing so helps bettors avoid scams and ensures their personal data stays protected.
