North Dakota Considers Bill to Restructure Gambling Oversight

North Dakota lawmakers are reviewing a bill that could significantly alter the state’s gambling regulations. Senate Bill 2224, currently under discussion, proposes eliminating the state’s gaming commission and transferring all regulatory authority to the Attorney General’s Office.

The Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly approved a “do-pass recommendation” for SB 2224 with a 4-3 vote. Supporters argue the measure would streamline oversight and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. Senator Janne Myrdal, who introduced the bill, emphasized the need to reassess the roles of various state commissions.

“Governor Armstrong mentioned all the boards and commissions and things that we have in our state, and how we need to look at which ones are pivotal for the functioning of our government and which ones are not,” Myrdal stated during the committee meeting. She added that the proposal came from concerns that the current gaming commission, while diligent in its duties, might be an unnecessary regulatory step.

Industry Pushback and Legislative Debate

Despite the bill’s progress, the gaming industry has voiced strong opposition. Industry representatives argue that removing the commission would weaken oversight and grant excessive power to the Attorney General. Critics believe the change could impact transparency and accountability in gambling regulations.

Several lawmakers have also expressed skepticism, questioning whether eliminating the commission would truly benefit the industry or the state. The debate is expected to continue as the bill moves forward in the legislative process.
