President Xi Jinping stressed the need of the area expanding its economic foundation during his visit to Macau from December 18 to 20. Xi called on the city to “embrace a broader vision” during his remarks at the Macau Special Administrative Region’s (MSAR) 25th anniversary festivities. The Chinese leader pointed out that although Macau has made progress in diversifying its economy, it still needs to keep changing in order to remain competitive in the global market. Xi’s remarks coincide with Macau’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond gambling and establish itself as a premier destination for leisure and tourism.
Call for Future Planning and Global Engagement
In his speech, President Xi highlighted the importance of aligning Macau’s development with China’s national strategy of rejuvenation. He praised the region for its strong gaming industry, which continues to grow in an orderly manner. However, Xi made it clear that Macau must stay relevant by adopting a scientific approach to its future planning. “Macau needs to adopt a scientific approach in its future development planning, and proactively align itself with national development strategies … and it could also seek to play a bigger role on the international stage,” said Xi.
One of Xi’s key recommendations was for Macau to become more open and attract global talent. The President emphasized the need for the region to develop economic sectors that are internationally competitive. This will require new strategies to recruit skilled professionals from around the world and tap into emerging industries that can drive future growth.
On December 20, Xi also participated in the inauguration of Macau’s new Chief Executive, Sam Hou Fai, who previously served as the city’s most senior judge. As part of the reshuffled leadership, Tai Kin Ip, the former head of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, was appointed as the new Secretary for Economy and Finance. This position will place him at the forefront of overseeing Macau’s gaming industry, a crucial component of its economy. Meanwhile, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau remains without a new director, as Adriano Marques Ho has moved to lead the Macau Customs Service.
