The Brazilian Federal Government has launched the Interministerial Working Group on Mental Health, Prevention, and Harm Reduction of Problem Gambling. This initiative signifies a major step toward regulating fixed-odds betting across the nation.
Bringing together representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Health, Sports, and the Secretariat of Social Communication, the working group aims to implement stricter regulations for the gambling sector. Its focus is safeguarding players’ mental health and addressing the social challenges posed by gambling.
In a recent statement, the Ministry of Finance emphasized the importance of this approach: “The focus is on developing strategies to prevent, mitigate harm, and offer support to individuals and communities affected by compulsive gambling practices or in vulnerable situations, considering the context of fixed-odds betting.”
The government sees regulation not just as an economic matter but as a necessity for social protection. The Ministry added, “By prioritizing the mental health and well-being of bettors, the Government makes a commitment to building a safer and more responsible environment.”
Regulatory Framework Gains Momentum
As Brazil prepares to launch its regulated sports betting and iGaming markets on January 1, the Ministry of Finance has enforced measures to ensure compliance. Since October 1, only licensed operators are authorized to provide services within the country. This marks a significant move to curb unauthorized gambling activities.
Over recent months, the government’s betting management system has received 121 license applications, reflecting growing interest in Brazil’s regulated market. These measures aim to establish a controlled and transparent betting landscape while protecting vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
The creation of the working group and strict licensing requirements highlight Brazil’s commitment to responsible gambling. By addressing the mental health implications and fostering a regulated environment, the country is laying a foundation for sustainable growth in its betting sector.
