The Birmingham Racecourse and Casino will be purchased from the McGregor family by Wind Creek Hospitality, which is owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Early 2025 is when the sale is anticipated to close. Wind Creek has already acquired four racetracks, demonstrating its dedication to growing its selection of games and entertainment.
Historical horse racing (HHR) games and parimutuel betting will remain available at the Birmingham Racecourse. Building on previous investments and working with local authorities to create future expansion plans, Wind Creek intends to turn the venue into a top entertainment destination.
“We are excited to bring the Birmingham Racecourse into the Wind Creek family,” said Jay Dorris, Wind Creek’s President and CEO. “Over those years, it became clear to us that we share many of the same goals — providing great entertainment, attracting tourism and creating economic growth in Alabama.”
Commitment to Alabama’s Growth
For decades, the McGregor family has managed the Birmingham Racecourse, striving to enhance its gaming and entertainment options despite legislative challenges. Birmingham Racecourse President Lewis Benefield remarked, “The people of Birmingham desire the same types of entertainment offered at other facilities in and around Alabama.”
With this sale, the McGregor family will shift focus to their VictoryLand property in Macon County while advocating for unified gaming legislation in Alabama.
Stephanie Bryan, CEO and Tribal Chair of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, emphasized the significance of the acquisition. “Birmingham is one of the most vibrant cities in America, and we feel very fortunate that this acquisition will allow us to increase the investment and deepen the relationships that we already have in Birmingham. We are committed to building on the success of both the Birmingham Racecourse and Casino and our Wind Creek brand by ensuring that this property will keep tourist dollars here at home and provide jobs that support Alabama families“ she said.
Wind Creek aims to not only elevate the Racecourse’s offerings but also retain tourist dollars within Alabama and create jobs to support local families.
