A Frederiksberg court decided in favor of the Danish Gambling Authority on August 22, 2024, permitting the blocking of 79 illicit gambling websites. Several of these specifically targeted youth, which is quite concerning.
Websites providing Danes with unlicensed gambling services are routinely blocked by the Danish Gambling Authority. They are taking this step as part of their efforts to protect customers and keep the gambling industry fair. The authorities has prohibited a record 162 websites in 2024 compared to other years. In Denmark, 438 illicit websites have been shut since 2012.
The blocking process involves DNS (Domain Name System) technology, which prevents players from accessing illegal sites through their internet service providers. Users trying to visit blocked websites are redirected to a page explaining that the site has been deemed illegal by the Danish Gambling Authority.
Concerns Over New Gambling Practices
Director of the Danish Gambling Authority, Anders Dorph, emphasized the importance of blocking sites that lack proper consumer protections. “We know that some players will try to bypass the DNS blocks… These sites do not have the same level of consumer protection and it can be very risky for a player to use them,” he said.
Particularly concerning in this latest wave of blocks are sites featuring “skin betting,” which uses virtual currencies like “Robux” from the popular game Roblox. Dorph added, “Our children should not be introduced to gambling when they play video games… I am very pleased that we have blocked access to these sites.”
In this round, three telecommunications providers not previously involved in blocking illegal gambling sites joined the effort, expanding the authority’s reach and ensuring greater player protection.
