The Rendezvous Casino in Brighton hosted the PokerStars UKIPT Main Event, drawing a notable crowd of 352 players across three opening rounds. From this number, 54 emerged victoriously into Day 2, each securing a minimum of £1,640. By Day 3, only six remained at the final table, poised for a showdown.
The highlight of the event was the triumph of PokerStars Team Online Pro, Benjamin Spragg. With a victory that netted him £69,120 and the coveted UKIPT trophy, Spragg marked his first win in a UKIPT event. Spragg shared his feelings afterwards, stating, “I’m genuinely really emotional. Having Adam [McKola] and other known players around made the final table feel less daunting.”
Dominik Nitsche, boasting over $20 million in live tournament earnings, began the final table as the player to watch. His aggressive strategy saw his chip count seesaw until the head-to-head with Spragg. Although he started behind Spragg in the heads-up match, Nitsche managed a brief comeback by doubling up with a straight. However, Spragg’s timely call on Nitsche’s bluff sealed Nitsche’s fate, leaving him with a paltry 5,000 chip. Spragg secured his victory in the subsequent play.
While Nitsche settled for the runner-up spot and £42,150, Spragg’s win was both lucrative and personally significant. Reflecting on his journey, Spragg mentioned, “I’ve been partaking in UKIPT’s since 2011. To finally win one leaves me speechless.”
