The 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) reached a thrilling conclusion for Event #45: $1,500 Mixed Omaha Hi-Lo, as Houston native William Leffingwell emerged victorious, claiming the top prize of $253,651 along with his first WSOP gold bracelet.
Leffingwell’s journey to the top was far from easy, as he had to compete against bracelet winners like Shaun Deeb, Joey Couden, Raj Vohra, and 2019 Main Event finalist Zhen Cai. Nonetheless, by the end of the night, Leffingwell proved his mettle and hoisted the much-coveted bracelet, bringing glory to the Houston PLO scene.
Having a supportive group to cheer him on played a significant role in Leffingwell’s win. It’s worth noting that initially, Leffingwell had not intended to participate in the WSOP until the main event. However, his best friend Scott Dulaney, who recently won a bracelet in Event #31, encouraged him to strive for a win before the main event. Accepting the challenge, Leffingwell announced, “Ok, I’ll come win the $1,500 Mixed Omaha event.” And so he did!
The final heads-up against Cai was short-lived, spanning just seven hands. A significant turn of events occurred on the second hand, enabling Leffingwell to seize the chip lead and momentum. This shift ultimately led to the end of Cai’s run, as he finished in second place, thereby enabling Leffingwell to claim the title.
