Ryutaro Suzuki, a 22-year-old poker youngster from Japan, has won World Series of Poker (WSOP) Event #36: $3,000 Nine Game Mix. This win not only bagged him a first-place prize of $221,124 but also crowned him as Japan’s seventh WSOP bracelet winner.
The win follows Suzuki’s successful stint in 2021 when he won an online Circuit ring for $140,050. His previous best live WSOP cash was only $3,000 for a 69th place finish in the Eight Game Mix. Suzuki’s journey to the top in this event was closely followed and celebrated by a large cohort of Japanese media and supporters.
Suzuki acknowledged the meaning of his victory for his country’s poker community: “Now the Japanese poker community is really growing up. There were a few bracelet holders, especially in mixed games. So it’s really so special for me and the poker community,” he said through his ‘translator’, fourth place finisher, Tamon Nakamura.
Day 3
Suzuki entered Day 3 in ninth place but managed to ascend the leaderboard swiftly. After several seasoned professionals were eliminated, Suzuki found himself leading the final table with 3,950,000 chips. Notable moments included his countryman Nakamura’s elimination of Justin Liberto and Renan Bruschi’s loss to Jason Pedigo.
Despite Walter Chambers taking the chip lead for a brief period, Suzuki regained control and solidified his lead by showcasing his unmatched strategy and aggression. Nakamura, whose roller-coaster performance saw multiple ups and downs, was finally eliminated by Suzuki. Following this, Suzuki defeated Jason Pedigo and entered the heads-up match against Chambers with a nearly 10-1 chip lead.
The match didn’t last long. Suzuki’s two aces bested Chambers’ straight and flush draws, sealing his victory and setting off celebrations among his supporters.
