In a remarkable development, the Illinois Gaming Board has granted Bally’s permission to open a temporary casino within the historic Medinah Temple in River North. The permission, which came during the board’s monthly meeting, clears the way for the casino to start as soon as next month. This temporary location will serve as a forerunner to the magnificent River West casino, which will be erected on the old site of the Chicago Tribune printing facility.
The $1.7 billion building will include a casino, restaurants, a spa, and a hotel tower with an eye-catching exterior that mirrors the glittering river. While the temporary casino is approaching completion, Bally’s chairman, Soo Kim, has stated that the final gaming board inspection and clearance is required before officially opening. Once the dry runs with equipment and personnel are done, the casino hopes to operate by the end of the summer.
The temporary casino, which will be situated within the Medinah Temple, will be on a lower scale than the planned permanent establishment. Within the 134,000-square-foot arena, Bally’s plans to have 750 slot machines and 50 table games. The company is anxious to begin operations, generate income, and create job prospects.
Despite the excitement surrounding the temporary casino, several River North homeowners have expressed concerns about anticipated traffic congestion and other hazards. Alderman Brian Hopkins of the 2nd Ward emphasizes the importance of addressing outstanding issues such as crime, traffic, and parking. Supporters, on the other hand, highlight the good impact the Medina plant will have on job development, with 700 positions projected to be filled. Furthermore, the cash collected will go towards Chicago’s pension funds, which advocates say is critical to the city’s financial well-being.
While the temporary casino nears completion, Bally’s is still working to create the permanent casino. Soo Kim, on the other hand, is optimistic about receiving the necessary approvals and plans to debut in the second half of 2026. Kim encourages citizens to visit the casino and establish their own opinions regarding the casino’s contributions to the community.
