John Monnette Now Has 5 WSOP Bracelets After Winning Event #30: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

High-stakes mixed game regular, John Monnette, has joined an elite group of poker champs at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP). The 41-year-old Las Vegas native made his mark by overcoming 522 other competitors in Event #30: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw. This latest victory not only netted Monnette a hefty sum of $145,863 but also etched his name in the annals of poker history by securing his fifth career gold bracelet.

This extraordinary accomplishment propelled Monnette to be the 35th player to ever bag five or more titles at the World Series. In addition to this, his most recent win pushed his total lifetime earnings close to a whopping $4 million.

Speaking to PokerNews live reporters post-victory, Monnette expressed, “It means a lot, that’s why we’re here in these tournaments, just battling. Nothing’s like it; nothing brings the energy that the WSOP does. You get the best players all playing together, battling to just get the bracelet.”

Monnette’s collection of five bracelets include wins across different poker games. His first bracelet was achieved in the $2,500 eight-game mix in 2011. The following year, he triumphed in the $5,000 seven-card stud event. After a five-year pause, he celebrated victory in the $10,000 no-limit deuce-to-seven single-draw lowball championship in 2017. His fourth bracelet was won in the 2021 $10,000 limit hold’em championship.

Although Monnette’s focus leans towards cash games, his record this year shows an impressive number of wins. 2023 saw him secure two titles along with six final-table finishes.

As the third and final day of the event commenced, Monnette began with the second-largest stack, with 18 players still in contention. Among those he outlasted were prominent players such as four-time bracelet winner Benny Glaser, Allen Kessler, Michael Rodrigues, and bracelet winners Carol Fuchs and Tom Schneider.

Ryan Hughes, a three-time bracelet winner who finished on top in an online event earlier in the series, ended in the sixth place, bagging $21,342.

Patrick Leonard, a seasoned online player with vast tournament scores, placed third for $60,915. He lost a significant pot to Monnette during three-handed play and later bowed out to Christopher Chung. Monnette and Chung then engaged in a thrilling heads-up match, which lasted over two hours.

Monnette finally took the lead and, in the final hand, won with an 8-6-4-3-2. Chung, the runner-up, walked away with a prize of $90,150, pushing his career tournament earnings close to $276,000.
