In what is described “a watershed moment for the Gulf”, Reuters reports that the United Arab Emirates, a region that has traditionally imposed strict Islamic rules on gambling, is changing its stance.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, the news agency reveals that gambling “in some form” could be permitted in the UAE in the near future.
A timeline and exact details still need to be determined, the sources say, although it is set to be imminent and most eyes are on Dubai, considering its open-minded policies towards tourists and foreign nationals.
Anthony Costa, regional president at Caesars Palace which in 2018 opened up a venue at Dubai Blue Waters, told Reuters.
“That acceptance now that there is going to be the potential of gaming in the UAE, in whatever form it’s going to be, allows people like Caesar’s and MGM as well to look at that closely.
I think it’s wonderful. Like anybody, if a license is able to be bid for, any global gaming company is going to want to be actively involved in the conversation.”
A year ago, serious reports circulated on social media that the Dubai government had started issuing gambling licenses. However the rumors were quickly dismissed by the Dubai Media Office as being “incorrect”
