Holland Casino Begins Construction of New Groningen Casino After Nine Years

Holland Casino has officially started construction of its new Groningen casino at Businesspark Ter Borch in the Netherlands. The October 30 ceremony brings the operator closer to restoring a permanent casino in the region, nine years after a fire destroyed its previous venue.

Good to know

• Holland Casino has started building its replacement Groningen casino near the A7 motorway.
• The original Groningen casino closed after a fire in August 2017, with a temporary location opening in 2018.
• Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit recently renewed the Holland Casino Online licence until September 2031.

Holland Casino Secures Five More Years of Online Gaming

The construction project follows another development for Holland Casino, which recently secured a five-year extension of its Dutch online gambling licence.

In September, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) approved eight renewed online gaming licences, including one for Holland Casino Online.

The new authorisation runs from October 2026 through September 2031, allowing the operator to continue offering regulated online casino games and sports betting in the Netherlands.

The regulator introduced additional checks during the renewal process, including reviews of previous compliance violations and measures taken to prevent further problems.

Meanwhile, Holland Casino continues investing in its land-based business, with Groningen becoming the latest location to receive a new property.

New Groningen Casino Replaces Venue Destroyed in 2017

The project has been under development for several years.

Holland Casino originally operated in central Groningen on Gedempte Kattendiep until a fire destroyed the building on August 27, 2017. The company subsequently opened a temporary casino in 2018 while looking for a permanent replacement.

In September 2023, Holland Casino selected Businesspark Ter Borch, just outside Groningen in the municipality of Tynaarlo, as the preferred location.

The new casino will sit beside the A7 motorway, making it accessible to visitors from Groningen, Drenthe, and surrounding areas.

Holland Casino initially targeted a 2027 opening, although the company has not confirmed a revised completion date or disclosed the construction budget.

The operator says the development will focus on sustainability, accessibility, and hospitality, while also supporting further commercial activity around Businesspark Ter Borch.

Holland Casino CEO Joins Construction Ceremony

Holland Casino CEO Petra de Ruiter attended the official construction ceremony alongside Tynaarlo mayor Marcel Thijsen and Richard van den Broek, one of the original Groningen casino employees.

Construction partners, municipal representatives, and casino staff also attended the event.

“Here, we are not only building a new property, but also a place where guests feel welcome and where our employees can work with pride. After years of preparation, it is special to see the plans actually becoming reality,” de Ruiter said.

Thijsen also welcomed the development, highlighting its potential contribution to the local economy and the surrounding business park.

Holland Casino has not yet provided details about the number of gaming tables, slot machines, or visitors the replacement venue will accommodate.
