Dealer Speaks Out After Sammy Farha Clash at Houston Cardroom

A dispute over a pot-limit Omaha hand led to last week’s confrontation between Sammy Farha and dealer Doug Caillier at Houston Social Cardroom. Caillier has now released a statement challenging the surveillance footage and describing the fallout from the incident.

Good to Know

  • Farha questioned a hand he did not play before the confrontation.
  • Caillier says the footage excludes events before and after the incident.
  • Houston Social suspended Caillier, while Farha reportedly returned despite an initial ban.

A Poker Hand Farha Did Not Play Started the Dispute

PokerNews reported that the argument followed a hand in a $1/$3/$6 pot-limit Omaha game with a $15 button straddle. Two players went all in on the flop and agreed to run the turn and river twice. One player won both runouts and collected the pot.

Farha, 67, did not participate in the hand. However, he accused Caillier of retrieving the losing cards from the muck and exposing them. According to a source cited by PokerNews, both players had already shown their cards, and the losing player disputed the accusation.

The surveillance video contains no audio. It appears to show Farha approaching Caillier after a dealer change, then shoving him near the chest as staff attempt to separate them. The pair later confront each other again near the cashier area.

Caillier alleged that Farha punched him. PokerNews described the visible contact as appearing more like a shove, while noting that the recording briefly cuts away. The footage therefore does not establish every detail of the encounter.

Suspension Leaves Caillier Uncertain About Returning

Caillier said hospital staff evaluated him and he filed a police report. Houston Social suspended him after the incident, and he does not expect the club to ask him back.

Meanwhile, reports about the consequences for Farha have changed. Initial coverage described a permanent ban, but PokerNews subsequently reported that he returned to the building the following day. That leaves questions about whether the club maintained the restriction.

The contrast forms part of the frustration Caillier expressed in his Facebook statement. He said he wanted to finish his work without a confrontation and rejected suggestions that he welcomed the attention.

“I never wanted any of this. I simply wanted to do my job.”

Dealer Says Farha Wanted a Reaction

Caillier also challenged the completeness of the footage. He said the club left out events before and after the confrontation that would help explain what happened.

The former Aria and Resorts World dealer said he remained calm and tried to walk away, but Farha continued approaching him.

“From my perspective, he seemed intent on provoking me into escalating the situation,” Caillier said.

“He appeared to be trying to get me to hit him. I’m bigger and younger than he is, and I was simply there doing my job. I had no interest in turning the situation into anything more than it needed to be.”

Just keep in mind that comments describe how Caillier interpreted the encounter. The silent recording cannot establish what either man said during the argument.
