Good To Know

  • Alberta joins Ontario as the second Canadian province with a competitive regulated iGaming market.
  • Active player accounts grew from 226,959 in July to 388,585 in September.
  • Fifty operators have secured approval, although only 24 operated during September.

Online Casinos Lead As Registration Deadline Passes

Online casino revenue reached CA$42.8 million in September, accounting for 75.6% of the Alberta iGaming market. August brought CA$35.7 million and an 82.5% share, following CA$17 million during the partial July launch.

Meanwhile, the October 13 deadline ended the grace period for operators to enter the regulatory framework. Unregistered online casinos and sports betting companies now face potential legal action.

Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) CEO Dan Keene said:

“Regulation matters. This is a market where approved iGaming Operators are held to high standards of accountability, and where revenue stays in the province to fund programs and services Albertans rely upon.”

September wagers reached CA$1.28 billion, while revenue grew 31% from August to CA$56.6 million.

Keene also said:

“Early results indicate that Albertans value the strong oversight and greater accountability offered by a regulated market. We hope to continue educating Albertans about the risks associated with illegal offshore sites and move them onto regulated platforms where they have rights and recourse when iGaming.”
