Alberta Lists 48 Gambling Platforms As Approval Deadline Passes

Alberta closed its iGaming transition window on October 13, with 48 approved sportsbook and casino platforms listed. Sites without provincial authorization must stop accepting wagers or risk enforcement action.

Good To Know

  • The approved roster includes Stake, DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel and theScore.
  • AGLC granted transition extensions individually, with October 13 as the final deadline.
  • Continuing unregulated betting could affect eligibility for future registration.

Alberta iGaming Rules Now Require Full Authorization

Alberta previously estimated that operators outside provincial regulation handled about 70% of online gambling activity. Bringing those players into a regulated system means applying local advertising rules, player protections and centralized self exclusion across participating sites.

Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally said last year: “Online gambling is here.” He added: “What we’re trying to do is we’re trying to make it safer.”

For operators, submitting an application alone does not authorize betting. Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) handles registration and regulation, while the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) manages commercial agreements with private operators.

Sites leaving the unregulated channel must also address existing customer funds. Transition guidance requires them to settle or cancel outstanding wagers and return account balances. Noncompliance can affect whether AGLC considers an operator suitable for registration.

Meanwhile, the approved roster includes separate casino and sportsbook platforms from some companies. The total of 48 therefore reflects listed platforms rather than 48 distinct parent businesses.

Alberta opened its competitive online gambling market on July 13, becoming the second Canadian province after Ontario to adopt that model. Ontario launched in April 2022 and set October 31 that year as its transition deadline.
