The Michigan Gaming Control Board has approved another year of operations for MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
The unanimous vote keeps all three Detroit casinos licensed through the next annual review in September 2027. The decision came after the regulator examined finances, operating practices and responsible gaming compliance.
Good to Know
Michigan requires commercial casinos to renew licenses every year, rather than granting open ended approval. MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown all cleared the latest review.
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said:
“Year after year, these renewals show that Detroit’s casinos continue to meet the high bar Michigan sets for operating with integrity. As the industry continues to evolve, our focus remains the same — protecting patrons, supporting responsible gaming, and making sure this remains an industry Michigan can be proud of.”
The regulator reviewed financial standing, casino operations and compliance with responsible gaming requirements under the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act before approving each license.
Recent revenue gives the renewals added financial context. Detroit casinos generated $109.72 million in August 2026, including $108.86 million from table games and slots. MGM Grand Detroit generated $52.90 million, MotorCity Casino $33.77 million and Hollywood Casino at Greektown $22.19 million.
Detroit casino wagering taxes equal 19% of adjusted gross receipts. Michigan receives 8.1%, while Detroit receives 10.9%, alongside additional payments under development agreements. Retail sports betting carries a separate 8.4% tax.
During August alone, the casinos paid $8.8 million in state gaming taxes and reported $17.1 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to Detroit.
The MGCB will consider the next annual license renewals for all three Detroit casinos in September 2027.
