Denmark Blocks Polymarket and 97 Other Gambling Domains

Denmark has blocked Polymarket alongside 97 other gambling domains after a court agreed that the sites targeted Danish players without a local licence. The action puts Denmark alongside a growing group of European markets treating prediction markets as gambling products rather than financial trading platforms.

Good to Know

  • The Frederiksberg court approved DNS blocking of 98 domains on July 8, 2026, with the blocks taking effect on August 6.
  • Polymarket appears as number 97 on the official list.
  • Denmark blocked 334 unlicensed gambling websites through court orders during 2025, showing that the latest action forms part of an established enforcement program.

Polymarket Joins Denmark Block List

Spillemyndigheden secured the latest order after arguing that all 98 domains offered gambling aimed at Denmark without the required licence. Danish internet providers now use DNS blocking to prevent access and redirect users to a warning page.

Polymarket gives users event contracts covering politics, sport, economics and geopolitical events. Denmark has now placed the platform in the same regulatory category as unlicensed online casinos and sportsbooks.

Minister for Taxation and Economic Growth Jakob Engel-Schmidt said:

“If you want to take part in the Danish market, you also have to play by the Danish rules. You cannot target your business at Danish consumers and make money from Danes while believing that the Danish rules do not apply to you.”

He also criticised markets involving war and death.

“A human life is not a betting slip. War should not be something you can sit at home on the sofa and speculate on to make money. That is why I am extremely pleased that Polymarket and a number of other gambling sites have now been blocked in Denmark.”

Danish law focuses on whether an operator targets local consumers rather than where the company itself operates. Spillemyndigheden can consider Danish language, Danish currency, local payment methods, Danish customer support, Steam connections or betting products aimed specifically at Danish players.

The ministry did not disclose which individual test each blocked domain failed.

European Regulators Close In on Prediction Markets

Polymarket makes the latest Danish case more important than a routine offshore casino block.

Nine European gambling regulators from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland issued a joint statement in June saying prediction market platforms must comply with national gambling rules.

France then ordered internet providers to block Polymarket on July 16. Autorité Nationale des Jeux said the platform promoted unauthorized gambling and noted that it attracted 205,057 unique French visitors in June alone.

Polymarket said it would challenge the French decision in court.

Denmark now applies a similar gambling-law interpretation. The difference lies mainly in enforcement procedure. Spillemyndigheden traditionally takes blocking requests to court, while France can impose administrative website blocks directly.

Danish enforcement has also become more frequent. Spillemyndigheden began bringing blocking cases twice annually in 2024, rather than once per year. During 2025, courts approved blocks against 334 websites, while another 36 sites changed or removed their Danish offering after contact from the regulator.
