GeoComply Reports Busy First Week for Alberta iGaming

Alberta opened its regulated online casino and sports betting market on July 13, becoming the second Canadian province after Ontario to allow competing private operators.

World Cup Final Lifts Alberta Betting Traffic

The FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina delivered the busiest period of the opening week. GeoComply recorded more than 53,000 geolocation checks around the July 19 match.

Calgary and Edmonton generated most activity during the first 72 hours. Across the full week, operators using GeoComply technology achieved a 99.5% verification pass rate, including during World Cup traffic peaks.

GeoComply also used Alberta for the first live deployment of Adaptive Verification. The browser-based system applies extra location checks when it detects higher-risk behavior rather than treating every customer session in the same way.

Alberta Market Opens With 22 Operators

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis registered 50 betting operators before launch. However, only 22 completed approval and went live on July 13.

Each operator also entered a commercial agreement with Alberta iGaming Corporation, the government body responsible for market oversight.

The Alberta model follows the competitive structure introduced in Ontario, although the two provinces use separate regulators and commercial systems.

GeoComply said its figures cover only partner platforms. Therefore, the 3.2 million checks and 100,000 registrations do not represent the entire Alberta online gambling market.
